He retired yesterday to take an undefined role in the Sabres organization. He is the best I ever saw at The Heights and he had a pretty damned good pro career. A current NHL player told me that you know how respected he was based on the fact he wore the C in Montreal as an American who did not speak French. He is probably the single biggest catalyst behind BC being far and away the best program of the 21st century and I think Jack Parker was correct when he said “He was worth two or three scholarships.” It is also important to remember that the game was not the finesse and speed game that it has become during the last eight or nine years. During Giontas prime it was much more of a grinding, brutal game. He probably survived a few extra years because of what the game became, but he missed it for his prime and I would have loved to see what mid-20s Brian Gionta, who could score 48 goals in a clutch and grab league could have done in the current game. Bon voyage to a great BC Guy.

His 48 goal year was the antithesis of clutch and grab. Half his goals were on the PP that year because players had no idea how to play anymore.

Really? A guy who won the Cup that year disagrees with you, but the cool thing about you is that you don’t let facts get in the way of the axe you apparently have to grind with most BC players. Show me on the doll where Jerry York and Rob Scuderi hurt you.

In addition, ESPN happened to look at the state of game the year Gionta scored 48. They determined that it was still a clutch and grab league with a telling quote from Steve Ruchin. Google NHL obstruction year by year and it comes up on the first page.

I don't have an axe to grind with anyone outside of calling you a dumbass and watching you get hot and bothered because you're a thin skinned bitch. I'm sure there was clutching and grabbing, they were just called penalties. There were an added 4 PPs per game due to the rule changes aimed to get less clutching and grabbing, allowing Cheechoo to sit backdoor and rack up 56 goals.

This changed moving forward and things became clutchier and grabbier and scoring went down.
