Captain D is building a good foundation. Losing Sanders and Heslip may hurt for a year, but if Donahue brings in BC Guys then I think this will be worth it.

Does Heslip still have to sit a year out, since he never saw the court?

Yes. He took classes for free. That started his clock. He will have to sit a year which means he will only be able to play 3 years. However, this may be one of those rare occasions where BC will try and get him to be eligible to play immediately.

Does he lose the entire year or just a semester since he enrolled in the spring?

Heslip used his redshirt "year" by showing up early and not playing during the season. He will ultimately have only 3 seasons to play after next year. :ace

So with Heslip out, and with the potential departure of Noreen and Papa, we are going to have about 10 roster spots to fill next year (assuming we don't give out a few schollies on late flyers this year). What do you think the approach will be? fill all the spots ASAP? bank some scholarships? I would personally like to spread out the scholarships a little more so we have a 2-3 new recruits a year. What do you guys think...

Nope. It's done on semester basis. So, Heslip lost 1 red-shirt semester. Athletes have 10-semesters of eligibility, but only 8 semesters where they can actually compete. Heslip still has 9 semesters of eligibility. So, he would be able to sit out the fall as a red-shirt and still have 8 semesters of eligibility. How those 8 semesters are broken up are up to Heslip and the school in question.

Problem is we still need to field a team. Probably need at least 4 freshman for 2011-12 and maybe a transfer, which will help spread it out a little more.

NCAA regulations stipulate that schools can only offer eight (8) basketball scholarships over a 2-year period and of those, only five(5) in a single year.

It looks like Ohio State has 6 for next year?

Ok... fine... but he has to sit out the next year (i.e. 2 semesters) due to the transfer rules.

The Fall of 2010, he cannot play but can use his final redshirt semester. The Spring of 2011, he cannot play and cannot use a redshirt. He can play Fall 2011/Spring 2012 and Fall 2012/Spring 2013 and Fall 2013/Spring 2014. But that will be it. As stated, unless he gets a special waiver, he will only be able to play 3 seasons... unless you think it realistic that a team would allow him to play November 2014 and December 2014 to exhaust his the extra semester of eligibility.

So under this scenario, he'd only be able to play the first third or so of his senior season? That's retarded.

No, homojs' math was inaccurate he will have 6 full semesters after next year so it would be 2011-2012, 2012-2013, 2013-2014 and then 2014 I guess. :ace

We may not be very talented, but at least the time will try on a more consistent basis. Also, you'll notice Coach D is starting to do that whole recruiting thing, our last coach wasn't too keen on that.

I think the scholarship rule has some sliding scale and deal for leavers like the 4 freshman at Kentucky or any school.

If you recruited 5, you get those 4 back, etc...

GDF gave me a meal stipend and a RA job in the Cheerleader dorm and shared bathrooms..

I can drill the 3 ball..I can basket hang....I ain't playing no stinkin defense...I am a shooter and a scorer...

The number of openings does bring to light some odd choices BC seems to be making. Your comments raise a pretty fair question.....which is more likely to be better deal.... Heslip for the next 4 years, or going without a player next year and then offering that scholarship to the 9th or 10th best player BC can get to sign for 2012?

I am estatic West.

If the kid could not be an ACC level guard who could take us to the title and we have 10 guys now albeit two are non-playing unless up by 30 white kids, Moso and Judge....then save the Bunny.

SAVE THE BUNNY for some talented kid. So in the next 2 years we have a full load of shells below deck...

Better to have a top level polished jewel with talent...then a maybe or coulda shoula who knows lets take a chance since we have so many openings...

SAVE THE BUNNIES!!!!!!
