This season isn’t about wins and losses. This season is trying to guess what the hell we have in Grant. His ability to get these players to play defense is nothing short of miraculous. That doesn’t suddenly mean they can do basketball. It just means that Grant can teach the teachable part of the game. For a program that has been a smoldering dumpster fire, this is a step in the right direction after a decade of taking them in the wrong.
This team won’t score much in the half-court. It will rely almost exclusively on points off of D and rebounds. URI’s D was excellent and the refs swallowing whistles was so noticeable on the Rhodie D that the A10 announcers astonished “no foul called though plenty of contact”. Langfords combined for only 10 points more than me. And yet, they were in the game by holding URI to 2 baskets in the second half.
This team isn’t going anywhere. But it at least is showing glimpses of where the program can go if the roster improves. Lots of ifs… but it is better than anything else we’ve tasted since Handsome Al was shown the door.
