HJS {l Wrote}:From the UCLA media it seems like Jonathan Smith or Jedd Smith.

But, we know Marty, and that is way too boring. He is all about winning the press conference and hiring either middling P12 coaches doesn't accomplish that.

I totally can see him trying to coax Chris Petersen or Urban Meyer out of retirement or see what it would cost to poach Kyle Whittingham or Lane Kiffin. If he strikes out, he can always grab Brian Harsin from the scrap heap or tab one of his former favorites for the BC job (Hafley or Elko).

Zero chance whittingham. Maybe kiffin. Reach Meyer

Kiffin is out of reach, as are all of those SEC head coaches. Kiffin makes $9.5 million. UCLA won't come close to that number, so he's not making that move.

Syracuse finally canned Dino Babers. Turns out giving camera-worthy locker room speeches doesn't win football games.

Early names for Syracuse in no order: Jason Candle, Bronco Mendenhall, Doug Marrone, Tony White, Al Golden, Curt Cignetti, Jim Knowles, Sean Lewis, Bob Chesney, Liam Coen and Teryl Austin.

none of these look all that appealing

Cuse will probably end up with Marrone Part 2 which isn't terrible. I will be upset if they hire Coen or Chesney as both would be good Plan B hires for BC in a year.

Jason Candle and Bronco are very good options (though I can't imagine Mendenhall taking a break from Charlottesville so he can live in Syracuse). The rest are meh. Marrone or Golden have a Dino-level Floor but an 8-win top. They should hire Chesney as he's ATL's latest iteration of Pete Lembo. Let someone else take User Error and his headsets so Whalepants don't convince BJ that he needs to weaken Holy Cross as much as he needs to better BC.

Most of these names don't apply to us because prior head coaching experience will be a prerequisite in the next hire. This hire will be so risk averse Jack Bicknell Sr, Skip Holtz, and even Jerry Rosburg should sit by their phones.

Among the Plan Bs, I wouldn't hate Cignetti. But let's face facts, it's going to be Chesney or Loeffler, unless both of them go off the rails next year.

candle seems like he's been a candidate for low level p5 jobs for a decade now (looking at his record it was probably around '17 or so after going 20-7).

seems like word is out that chesney is moving on as his all american linebacker and QB entered the portal. Sluka went for 10-15 130 passing yards and 19 rushes for 131 and 2 TDs against us. Dobbs had 10 tackles in our game and finished season with 132 & 5 sacks.

I believe they don't get the extra Covid year in the Patriot League, but would in the ACC/SEC/Big10/etc.

claver2010 {l Wrote}:some familiar names:

https://theathletic.com/3550552/2022/08 ... -carousel/

College football assistant coaches to watch this season: Bruce Feldman’s hot list

21. Justin Frye, Ohio State, associate head coach, O-line coach

The 38-year-old former Indiana offensive tackle was a graduate assistant under Urban Meyer at Florida before coaching with Ryan Day at both Temple and Boston College. He spent the past four seasons a right hand man to Chip Kelly at UCLA, where they’ve overhauled the program and put together a pretty nasty running attack. Last season, the Bruins led the Pac-12 in scoring and were No. 2 in total offense. Frye returns to the Big Ten and should improve the Buckeyes O-line and make OSU’s run game even more potent. This is a guy who will get snapped up to be someone’s head coach before too long in FBS football.

34. Aazaar Abdul-Rahim, Boston College, associate head coach, DB coach, passing game coordinator

The Eagles have made huge strides in their pass defense since Jeff Hafley took over and brought Abdul-Rahim to BC. In the year before they arrived, BC ranked No. 114 in passer rating allowed. They shot up to No. 28 in 2021. More impressively, they’ve gone from No. 124 in long pass plays allowed (20 yards plus) up to No. 2 in the country. Give a lot of credit to Abdul-Rahim for that. It’s part of why he drew interest from Power 5 programs for their DC vacancies, and don’t be surprised if there are a lot more offers this winter.

frye is one of favorites for indiana job

3 decades ago, John Cooper had an incredible record at Ohio State, beat everyone EXCEPT for Michigan. Alumni and fans wanted him fired for the exact same reason. You MUST beat Michigan, particularly because not beating Michigan means you never win an outright B1G title (Cooper never won one.)

There is nothing new under the sun.

As for HCRD, he is an excellent coach who should immediately be leaving for the NFL to try and save the careers of players like Justin Fields or Bryce Young (noting Carolina won’t hire him after their experience with Rhule). The longer HCRD stays in Columbus, the more he will be hated. He’s not “one of their’s” and more and more seem to feel that he has jumped the shark this year (especially after losing to a Harbaugh-less Mich team).

As someone who holds out hope (for absolutely no reason) that Chip would come home once he left UCLA - might help BC's timing that he stays one more year, probably times well with Haf's departure.

Fun fact about John Cooper. In addition to getting anally raped by Michigan on the regular, he was also 0-4 as the head coach at ASU against Arizona, including a massive upset loss in 1985 that likely cost ASU a national championship.
