True, but it also reduces their bargaining power with the Big Whatever.

another pressure on ND is that other than USC, will any of these super conference teams want to do a home & home with ND? If they play a 7 game conf schedule against very good teams and every other year only 3 home games, they are going to want the other 4 games to be filled with home games where they pay UMass type teams $1m to serve as canon fodder.

I don't know if there will be cupcakes other than the shitty teams that are already in. TV is going to dictate a lot of this and they don't want to pay for ND-Ball State etc.

So what would happen to the Cupcakes if they don't get their $ from getting prison raped twice a year?

they drop football and replace it with lax and rocketcar making

I think it touches upon the challenge facing college football. Participation in the sport is way down. Interest in the sport has waned for most of the country. And now, the few programs still profiting are attempting ill-fated consolidation.

If you want to pretend college football is a “business”, then let’s discuss that. Who invests in a business that is simultaneously looking to increase their labor costs while dramatically shrinking its customer base. It is a reverse-growth story. If they are giving up on the major media markets, that means they are foreclosing any future expansion opportunities.

It’s a very bizarre experiment that is going exactly as you would expect considering who is running the process: Higher Ed Administrators (many who are politically appointed) and failed athletes (some who graduated Indiana (as a DOCTOR) and UNC Wilmington).

So... the Billion Dollar package that is being handed to B10 is being split among FOX/CBS/NBC with Fox getting the 12 game, CBS the 330 and NBC gets the nightcap. In other words, ESPN is being frozen out of all B10 content. Their response will go a long way to determining the next decade. They could overpay for B12 or P10... they could have SEC grab a couple of ACC schools and then match. Or... they could financially incentive some sort of ACC/P12 partnership.

So does this lead to less coverage on ESPN, no college game day at B10 schools and then an erosion of the value of the product. We all hate ESPN's power, but they do have power, esp with Game Day and their highlight shows.

That's the experiment. It hasn't worked for other organizations (NHL), but the BigTen is happy to be the richest guinea pig in history.

It killed the NHL. Exposure is gold.

Doesn't NBC broadcast some really high-interest ND home games at night, or are they always at 3:30?

The NHL moving from ESPN to the Outdoor Life Network killed it. It was also almost 20 years ago with the league coming off a cancelled season with a much different TV landscape.

I don’t think ESPN has the balls to freeze out the Big 10. Remember, Notre Dame essentially told ESPN to get fucked around 30 years ago which has cost ESPN some of the most highly watched games each season—including the most watched college game in history and five of the top 10 of the last 30 years. And this all happened while Notre Dame greatly underperformed its historic norms in terms of rankings, etc. And what did ESPN do when Notre Dame had these marquis games at home (to be televised on NBC)? They showed up and did College Gameday at Notre Dame for (a couple of Notre Dame-FSU, a couple of Notre Dame-USC games, a couple of ND-Michigans, a ND-Nebraska, an ND-Ohio State, an ND-Texas, and an ND-Clemson). Sure, ESPN’s coverage of Notre Dame football over the last 30 years is like watching a spurned girlfriend passively-aggressively go after an ex-boyfriend she is still pining for, but when Notre Dame was drunk and made a booty call, ESPN dutifully showed up and sucked his dick. And while they’ll be salty about it, they will still show up for USC-Ohio State at the Horseshoe in November when national championships are on the line.

What’s interesting is that this has been talked about in Notre Dame circles since before the USC-UCLA move. The reported number Notre Dame was asking for to stay independent—which the Big 10 and the SEC want if they themselves can’t land Notre Dame—was $75 million to $100 million a year. NBC purportedly was amenable to that deal because (a) the ratings are very good, as is the ad revenue from the Notre Dame brand and (b) the 3:30 ND start would be a fantastic lead for the prime time Big 10 game. Notre Dame has made it clear that they only want one home night game per year because more than half of their road games are typically prime time ESPN or ABC (USC/Stanford, the Shamrock Series, Michigan, Clemson/FSU/VA Tech/Miami) so that arrangement works for Notre Dame’s purposes as well. Will be interesting to see when NBC announces that deal.

B12 just signed their TV deal with ESPN/FOX for their post-OU/TX/Cincy/UCF conference. $50mm per year per team.

$50M per in the bridge deal with TX and OU. $31.7M per team after that. https://sportsbusinessjournal.com/SB-Blogs/Breaking-News/2022/10/Big-12-renews-media-deal-ESPN-Fox.aspx

If I had to guess, $31mil a year is probably a hell of a lot more than BYU was making on their own as an independent. Its only the fighting French who can pull that shit off and make it work financially.

Nah… the $50mm came from McMurphy. Went back and reread it. He included NCAA and playoff money along with $31.7 in media rights. The issue on the horizon is SEC renegotiating 2 years before the ACC GOR ends. The conference will have to get out in front of that in 2032. Maybe we will play in a bowl game at some point between now and then.

Sounds like UCLA's fate will be decided next week. A Players Group took some not-so-veiled shots at Jarmond. The question I have... if UCLA turns down the B10, how fast will Phil Knight be calling Chicago?

If you follow the history, FSU’s AD going public with his comments are preview of the arguments being made regarding them leaving. As for the ACC in general and BC in particular, this is the beginning of the end. If FSU, who hasn’t competed nationally in a decade (with comparable economics) says they can’t compete with a $30mm gap, what do you think it means for the crap schools who have to forgo an additional $10mm per to keep them (and Clem and UNC) happy? Ultimately, this is the real legacy of Bill Leahy. BC was well-positioned to take the next step Nationally once it joined in the ACC. Instead, Fr. Leahy just cashed the welfare check with no motivation to reinvest in the product. Now, it’s too late. His malfeasance has brought about very real economic harm (along with every member of the crappy BOT who ceded their oversight responsibility to maintain their cushy status). It’s a shame this obvious eventuality has finally come to pass.

FSU is irrelevant and add nothing to the SEC. Maybe they will appeal to the Big Ten but seems like a weird fit other than being a state school.

Not worried about BC as being in the 6 biggest TV market will carry weight if it this all gets reduced to four conferences.

Nice to see Mr. Always Wrong thinks TV market location is a driver in the final round of expansion for the two super conferences.

Alford was hired to get F$U out of the ACC. The ACC should do nothing to appease him. Bottom line is that, if FSU hasn’t sucked for a decade, the ACC wouldn’t be struggling with TV revenues. The conference was supposed to be about FSU/Miami becoming OSU/Mich. Instead, we got Durant/Kyrie.
