bignick33 {l Wrote}:Sox and PapelSmear agree to terms to a one year deal in the mid 9 mil range. They avoid arbitration.

I really thought he was going to walk and someone else would overpay for him. Maybe he realized how badly he was exposed last season.

He can't walk, he's under control for two more years.

/I respect you.

Wasn't 2010 the last year on his contract? I was under the impression he would be going into his last season (unless his contract was extended).

I respect you.

Arbitration eligible next year (only 4.064 years of service time and you need 6)....

His arb number next year will be quite high though, so they may try to trade him to a team willing to give an extension?

Papelbon seems intent on hitting the FA market. I know the Sox have tried to get him long-term a few times in the past so as to avoid this whole arbitration process but he's always scoffed at the notion. I'm also pretty sure he's stated or strongly implied that he's going to test the FA waters when he becomes eligible.

Any interest the Red Sox pretend to have in signing Papelbon long term is feigned. They are perfectly content letting him test the free agent waters.

Completely agree. With the emergence of Bard, he's all but gone one his arb years are up.

Also agreed. Similar to the Angels, I'm not sure the Sox believe in paying top dollar ($15 Mil/year+) for a closer. The difference between a top-notch closer and a good closer is a couple of wins a year. It's a value question.

(different pitchers but same makeup upstairs it seems)

Good call. Speaking of D-Lowe, he got himself into some trouble overnight.

I figured out what Lackey looks like: a guy from a werewolf movie who has stopped mid-transformation. That's why his jaw and brow stick out and he breathes so heavily.

Lackey is fat a bum and we should probably trade him to the Mets.

Thinking more about this, I'm sure the Mets would take Lackey. He could be the next Mr. Met.

I speak for all of Red Sox Nation when I say that we'll gladly cover the entirety of his remaining salary plus future donut considerations if turn him into your mascot.
