twballgame9 {l Wrote}:Not entirely sure why Matheny has 2 guys in the pen that will never pitch. Given the pressure and the temperature of the WS, starters generally dominate and go longer, and given that there is no tomorrow, the better relievers generally give you a ton more innings (this has been the Sox formula with Foulke in '04, Papsmear in '07, and now Koji in '13). There was no reason to carry a 5th starter and your deposed closer. Unless the Cards don't have any RH bats in their system other than the backup catcher, in which case grabbing Axford at the trade deadline instead of a guy that can get hit Lester and Dubront will turn out to be the death knell.
Maybe hansen can explain, since I didn't see the game, but how did that lineup light up Kershaw in the clincher of the NLCS? Ryu had success right? I didn't follow that closely.

On paper this is the likely outcome. However, I would note three mitigating factors: (1) Wacha, while awesome, is still a rookie pitching in Fenway in what could be the first clinching game there since 1918; and (2) although it didn't result in many runs, some of the long silent Red Sox bats showed some life this past game (Ellsbury in particular); (3) the Sox are throwing Lackey in Game 6, who has clinched a WS in his career and seems to be hitting on all cylinders.
Expect it to be close and low scoring, and would avoid the money line like the plague (as I said the last time these two matched up) but if forced to pick, I would stick with my original prediction and say Sox in 6 on a hot game from Ellsbury to guarantee that he never wears the uniform again (eff you Boras).

i would still argue the redsox bats are still dormant. they're RBIs last night were balls down the line that could have gone either way. colelctively, their BAs are below .200. Ortiz is the exception; guy is on another planet now. if i was matheny, then i would not pitch to him in any situation (and that includes bases loaded). maybe wacha can with his stuff (once or twice through the order) but no one else on the team has the stuff to get him out right now.

I assume this is to prompt some action on the board since hansen gave up.
Similar to the game 6 home pounding of Kershaw in the NLCS by a team that cannot hit lefties, this feels like it is over despite the opposing starting pitcher being out of his mind. This will be the second time the Sox see him in Fenway in a week, and that usually bodes well for them.

pick6pedro {l Wrote}:The thought of Jake Peavy on the mound tomorrow should be enough to scare the Sox offense into some late-inning scores.

His performance would've been fine if not for Breslow. Wasn't great, but certainly enough to get to Dubront, who the Cards can't touch because he is left handed. In fact, they may start Dubront and use Lester out of the pen. That's what I would do.

starting jake peavy in game 7 would be a disaster for the redsox. maybe it would work but it's not the move that I would make if i was managing that team.

No idea. My drunkenly purchased Trot Nixon/JD Drew official home jersey is buried at the bottom of my storage unit. Was purchased on a random night in 2004 when those with me also purchased Varitek and Everett (now Ellsbury) jerseys. $700 total for shit not likely worn again (by the guys that purchased them at least)

Convict was probably a freshman at BU at the time.
